This glass sculpture depicts a T4 bacteriophage, a virus that infects Escherischa coli bacteria, once used as an alternative to antibiotics in the former Soviet Union. Luke Jerram, the sculptor of the T4 bacteriophage, has created many different pieces representing viruses, as part of the Glass Microbiology collection. Jerram hopes to offer the public an accurate model of these virus particles, as they are frequently depicted as colourful, when in fact they are smaller than the wavelength of light. The sculptures are featured in museums around the world, including The Metropolitan Museum in New York, and are used as illustrations in textbooks and medical journals.
